True Witness

When we think of the commandment to not bear false witness, we often think of it as a commandment not to lie, and that is one valid application. However, we should do more than just avoid deliberately spreading false information; we should also strive to avoid unintentionally doing so as well.

When I was a kid, I remember watching Muppet Classic Theater, in which the Muppets performed several classic fairy tails. One of the stories they told was The Boy Who Cried Wolf, but with one key difference. In the original fairy tale, the shepherd boy is bored, so he pranks the townspeople multiple times by claiming he saw a wolf when there was none. In the Muppets version however, the shepherd (played by Gonzo) isn't deliberately dishonest. Instead, he just overreacts to tiny things and jumps to conclusions rather than getting all the facts straight, rushing to warn the townspeople about some impending disaster (including flood, earthquake, and plagues of insects) that then never materializes. In both the original and the Muppet version of the story, when the wolf eventually does show up, the shepherd runs to warn the town, but they don't trust him. But in Gonzo's case, his character flaw was not that of lying, but of not making sure what he was saying was true before telling it to others.

If we're not careful, we too can fall into the trap of unintentionally spreading false information. We naturally want to warn others when we suspect something might be wrong. But in the heat of the moment it's easy to forget that we don't always see things accurately. And while we might have good intentions, the consequences of being careless about the truth can be just as damaging as if we had intentionally lied. Spreading false information can damage reputations or or encourage harmful actions. And even if we happen to get it right, developing a habit of carelessness increases the chances of getting things wrong in the future.

Being careless about the truth could manifest in a number of ways:

  • Assuming that someone is guilty before learning all the facts,
  • Assuming that someone's actions are motivated by malicious intent,
  • Sharing a fact, quote, or statistic without checking its source,
  • Sharing a news story or article without verifying that it is accurate,
  • Sharing a news story or article without even reading it,
  • Presenting something as established fact when it is actually a matter of opinion or still being researched,
  • Implying another source is unreliable without providing a valid reason for skepticism,
  • Etc.

This is not to absolve others from their own responsibility to vet the accuracy of what they see, read, or hear. But we make that task easier by not inadvertently giving false information further paths to spread. We don't need to have absolute certainty before sharing something. And even the most careful individual will make mistakes. But by making a conscious effort to spread truth and not error, our ability to discern what is truth will grow stronger with time.

Direct Thy Paths

Another birthday gift! I've done a drawing based on this passage of scripture before, but it was requested specifically because it is the Primary theme for next year. This version emphasizes the fact that while the world may appear to have many enticing gifts to offer, when we follow the path the Lord has shown us, we will find even greater riches. Even though we will need to work harder to get them, they will last much longer.

Trust in the Lord

There will be times in our lives when God will ask us to do or experience very difficult and even scary things. Sometimes those things may seem to contradict common sense or our best interest. But the Lord knows the end from the beginning. It is very often the difficult road that takes us to where we want to be, and the easy road that leads to distractions and pitfalls. The way we determine which road will ultimately lead us to the most happiness is to seek the Lord's guidance and then trust Him when we receive it.

White as Wool

A reminder that there is no stain that the atoning power of Jesus Christ cannot erase. We have only to accept His invitation to be made clean.

I tried inking this one by hand and then coloring it digitally. I like some things about the process but there are other things I want to refine.

Nothing Too Hard

A commission. When God makes us a promise, we can be confident He will deliver, impossible though it may seem. The Bible is full of notable examples of this, and every day our real lives are full of less obvious but no less significant instances. Difficult and painful though our present circumstances may be, we can look to God with the hope that He will keep all his promises and fix all things that are broken; even us.

The commissioner for this piece chose the scripture, character, and pose. For those unfamiliar, this creature is known as a sergal, which is a fictitious alien species resembling something like a cross between a shark and a rabbit or kangaroo. The choice in species doesn't have anything, in particular, to do with the chosen scripture; simply a stylistic choice.

If you'd like an illustration featuring a scripture or inspirational quote of your choice, check out my commissions page for more info: sourpeppers.com/p/commissions.html

Train up a child

As fathers, we have a responsibility to teach our children correct principles. If we do, we will equip them for the time when they have children of their own.
Some have asked, why does this passage say our children "will not depart from" the things we teach them? Are we depriving them of their agency by teaching them the Gospel or other things we believe to be true? I don't think so. However, I do believe that it means when we teach our children the Gospel, it will stay with them, even if they wander away from it. The choice will need to be their own, but the opportunity to return will always be open to them if we do our duty as parents and teach them by word and by example.
Happy Father's Day!

A Haughty Spirit

It doesn't matter how fabulous you think you are; if you're too proud to look down, sooner or later you will fall.

Watchmen

A watchman in a tower has a vantage point where he can see much further than those on the ground. He can therefore see things that may be coming more easily. That's the whole point: so he can raise the alarm and those on the ground can prepare before the threat arrives. It would be foolish for those on the ground to ignore such a warning just because they can't see the threat. God has set watchmen over us. They are prophets, apostles, church leaders, and even members of our own families when acting upon inspiration from the Lord. The threat of the adversary is very real, and so the true servants of the Lord will never cease warning of the evils of the day. It is up to us to head the warning.

Serve The Lord

The world has different idols and gods than it did in Joshua's day. But his counsel to be deliberate about who or what we choose to serve remains relevant. The transient trappings of mortality have their place. We should do what we can to keep them there, and choose to serve God by learning of Him and His Gospel and by loving and serving those around us.

Looketh on the Heart

Judging another based on outward appearance can mean judging based on looks, but could also mean judging based on personality, habits, and even their actions. Think about the last time you met someone new. What assumptions did you make about that person based only on what you could see right in front of you? How did your impression of that person change after you got to know them and learned more about their story? It's natural to judge before knowing all the facts. But we should remember that the only perfect judge is God, and examine our thoughts more closely the next time we find ourselves passing judgement one of our brothers or sisters.

Beauty For Ashes

Last Sunday the Provo City Center Temple was dedicated to the Lord! What a wonderful experience it was! Not only is this new temple a symbol of the Lord and His Atonement, but also of rebirth, renewal, and God's ability to take disaster and mourning and turn it into wonderful blessings.

Thy Rod Comforts

While pondering one of the most well-known and beloved Psalms, I suddenly recognized something. It is the Lord's rod and staff that can give us comfort when we are traveling through the valley's of mortality. What do they represent? I think it would be appropriate to draw a connection to the iron rod seen in Lehi's dream. The Lord has provided us with His word, which will be a comfort and a guide if we will cling to it with all our strength.

Teach Thou Me

This one may seem like an odd choice, but I was reading in Job recently and this verse struck me. Now, Job's attitude when asking this may not have been totally correct; he seemed to be suggesting that God was judging him harshly and punishing him for some iniquity he didn't know about. However, with the right spirit, it can be very enlightening to ask God to help us to recognize our flaws and weaknesses so that we can improve and stop making the same mistakes.
